He completed his early schooling from St. Joseph’s College Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. After that, he briefly attended the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Princeton University. He has received a degree in law from Allahabad University.

Prashant Bhushan started his career as a social activist influenced by his father. He mainly focuses on human rights, environmental protection, and the accountability of public servants. He is associated with various governmental and non-governmental organizations like Centre for Public Interest Litigation, People’s Union for Civil Liberties, and Transparency International India. He was also the co-founder of the Swaraj Abhiyan and Sambhaavnaa in the interest of Public policy and politics. 

He has fought around 500 court cases for good causes and only charges 5 percent of the normal fees for any case. He fought many cases for judicial accountability, Government accountability, Naxalism, and against the death penalty.

In 2010, he also joined the “India Against Corruption” movement led by Anna Hazare with many other social activists who participated in the anti-corruption crusade. In 2012, he co-founded a political party named “Aam Aadmi Party” stating that all other political parties were corrupt. Later in 2015, he left the Aam Aadmi Party due to his internal party conflicts with the party’s chief Arvind Kejriwal.

Along with these Prashant Bhushan was involved in many social movements and judiciary cases with and without his involvement in the active politics of the country.

Controversy

Prashant Bhushan was involved in many controversies for his controversial comments on others and his criticism for the government. In 2011, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh alleged him that Bhushan had failed to pay taxes due when they bought an investment property in Allahabad. Later in the same year, Bhushan stated that he wanted the Armed Forces Special Powers Act to be revoked in Jammu and Kashmir at a press conference in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.

In 2015, he alleged Aam Aadmi Party’s chief Arvind Kejriwal for selecting candidates of his own choice. Recently he also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being corrupt and a puppet of Reliance Industries. He also added that RSS is supporting terror activities and criticized Bharatiya Janata Party for its links with the RSS.

Recently he found guilty of contempt for his two tweets on Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and the Supreme Court. The court will decide on the sentence on 20 August 2020.

On 14 August 2020, Bhushan was found guilty by the Supreme Court of India on contempt for derogatory comments against the Indian judiciary and Chief justice of India. Once in an interview, he stated that he effectively spends only 25 percent of his time on paid cases and he never takes up a case unless he feels that his client his morally right.
