Swami Shivapremananda was a monk and yogi who was known for spreading the teachings and disciples of Sivananda yoga all over the world. He had organized several yoga seminars and retreats in different countries throughout the world.

Born on 26 July 1925, Swami Shivapremananda’s age was 94 years when he took his last breath in 2019. He was born and brought up in a well-to-do family from Berhampore, West Bengal, India. His born name was Sukhendu Ranjan Ray.

Since childhood, he was a meritorious student and has wanted to join civil services after his graduation but destiny has some different plans for him. At a very young age, he went to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand where he met his idol Swami Sivananda.

Family Details

Swami Shivapremananda belongs to a well-settled family from Berhampore, West Bengal, India. He was an Indian by nationality and had faith in the Hinduism religion.

His father’s name was Sudhendu Ranjan Ray who was an educationist by profession and his mother’s name was Swarnalataa who belongs to a wealthy family that deals in silk. Swami Shivapremananda’s marital status was unknown.

Career

Swami Shivapremananda started his career as an immense follower of Swami Sivananda. He spent almost 16 years with him and learned yoga, comparative religions, and philosophy. He also served as the personal secretary of Swami Sivananda. After that, he started teaching yoga at the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy in Rishikesh and also wrote columns and worked with Divine Life and Wisdom Light monthly magazines.

He also participated in many social causes under the Sivananda Eyes Relief camps and visited monasteries in the Himalayas and Tibet. In 1961, he held responsible as the director of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Milwaukee and then in New York.

After that, he visits many countries and established Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers in cities like Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Santiago. He also wrote many books like “Step by Step Yoga for Stress Relief”, “An Insight into Yoga”, and “Vaincre Le Stress Par Le Yoga”.
